SASF Second Annual Pickleball Fundraising Tournament Raises Over $10,000 for Sports For Life
The Event
On Saturday, August 9, 2025, the SASF Sports Complex came alive with the sound of pickleballs popping, friendly competition, and the laughter of 100 participants gathered for our second annual pickleball fundraising tournament. Thanks to the incredible generosity of the Yee Foundation family sponsors, major donors, and New China for food sponsorship, along with the energy of our players, volunteers, and community, we raised over $10,000 for the Sports For Life program.
More than $8,000 came from sponsors and major donors before the first serve, with an additional $3,000 raised through the tournament's raffle, silent auction, and day-of participation. Congratulations to Soames Funakoshi, our tournament champion, for taking home the win!
About Sports For Life
Sports For Life is a program dedicated to youth and adults with disabilities, designed for participants 10 and up. It offers a welcoming space to build skills, confidence, and friendships through organized sports and activities.
The Elk Grove Unified School District serves a substantial number of students with disabilities — about 17% of its student body — highlighting a strong community need. While public schools are required to provide inclusive sports and activity options, in practice many students with disabilities face barriers to participation. These challenges only grow when students graduate, with few accessible programs available in the community. SASF is committed to filling that gap, meeting people exactly where they are.
Community Support
We were honored to welcome Mr. Giezi Bermudez, District Director for California State Assemblymember Stephanie Nguyen, whose presence reinforced the importance of inclusive programming in our region.
Our Thanks
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all participants, donors, sponsors, volunteers, and SASF staff who made this day possible. Events like this embody what SASF does best — bringing together sports, community, great food, and friendly competition — all while supporting the life-changing work of Sports For Life.
Thank you for a successful SASF Summer League 2025!
SASF was proud to revive three divisions of basketball this summer, welcoming more than 200 participants from kindergarten through sixth grade. Over six weeks, these young athletes honed their skills and competed with enthusiasm under the guidance of volunteer coaches ranging from seventh-grade mentors to college students. The fourth‑through‑sixth‑grade boys and girls divisions took the court twice a week, culminating in playoff championships. In the girls division, the Green Team mounted an impressive second‑half comeback to secure the title. On the boys side, the undefeated Pink Team capped a dominant season with a well‑executed championship win. Our rookies division (K–3) competed every Thursday night in half‑court 3‑on‑3 games, showcasing emerging talent and infectious energy.
Beyond wins and losses, the league met its most important goal: bringing children and families together around the game, building friendships, and fostering confidence, skill development and a genuine love for basketball. The smiles and cheers heard from the stands all season reflect the success of this mission. Thank you to the coaches, players, and supporters who made this season possible. We look forward to seeing everyone return next summer.
Thank You, Alyssa Chow and Amy Wong – SASF's Newly Appointed Emeritus Board Members
Alyssa Chow
It is with heartfelt gratitude that we honor Alyssa Chow and Amy Wong. Alyssa Chow served from 2016–2022 across multiple roles (Secretary, VP) and was instrumental in founding the Sports for Life initiative. Amy Wong, a founding board member and longtime Treasurer, has been with SASF from its inception until very recently. Her unwavering dedication over the years has supported virtually every SASF program, and her financial stewardship helped lay the foundation for the organization's continued success.
Their enduring contributions define SASF's legacy, and we are proud to recognize them as Emeritus Board Members.

"I grew up in this program, first in summer basketball league and giving back as a basketball coach and referee. This organization does so much for the communities of Sacramento and Elk Grove. Their dedication to youth development through sports and leadership programs include teen women empowerment, a talent show completely organized by youth, and basketball, ages 7-18. They have added new programs to address teen mental health, and sports programs and a fishing derby for special needs youth. Pickleball for Seniors continues to grow by leaps and bounds. An anticipated program with SMUD includes classes on the use of modern and efficient kitchen equipment."
