SPARK's Parent-Child Communication Event is a success!

"We are professors, some of us are parents, and none of us are actors" and with that Dr. Rona Hu opened the October 29 SPARK Event at SASF. Dr. Hu created CHIPAO (Communication Health Interactive for Parents of Adolescents and Others) in response to a cluster of teen suicides in Palo Alto that occurred pre-covid. Dr. Hu and her colleagues at Stanford University and UC Davis Medical School performed live before 100 appreciative parents and adults. Vignettes portraying everyday communication challenges between parents and their children gripped the audience, leading to heartfelt and poignant discussions. Dr. Hu was highly complimentary of all aspects of the event, calling it "Amazing" and the most diverse audience so far. SASF directors in attendance hailed the event. Parents, mostly from Elk Grove Unified School District, found the roleplaying on-point and the advice illuminating. Others said the event exceeded their expectations in many ways. A scrumptious lunch catered by Mikuni's and raffle prizes rounded out the event.

SASF's SPARK program began in 2019 in response to the rapid rise of teen anxiety, depression and suicide across the nation and in our own community. Since then, four events have addressed teen mental wellness and resiliency beginning with two online events, the film Angst (2020), Kaiser Permanente's "Ghosted" Educational live film and Theatre (2021); and two in-person events, One Degree of Separation (April 2022) and Parent-Child Communication (October 2022). Sutter Health is a major sponsor. Kaiser hosted their event.

SPARK's Steering Committee - Noel and Lori Domine, and their children Riley and Alyssa; Kyle Chan, Margaret Ching, Denise Murata and Chair Eric Wong (SASF Vice President) - are excitedly planning for 2023 so stay tuned!

Thank you for your support: Teens Create Dreams Talent Show

On August 20th, 2022, Teens Create Dreams held its first in-person talent show after two years at John F. Kennedy High School in Sacramento, California. Run by Sacramento area high school students, the program has spent every summer organizing and hosting talent shows whose benefits are donated to local Sacramento Charities for the last 10 years.

After two years without talent shows being held in-person, the success of this year’s event has been paramount in keeping the program alive. Featuring performances from the TCD Hype Team Board and returning performer and co-president Isabella Paragas, the pajama-party themed show was a welcome addition to over 300 audience members' evenings.

All of the proceeds from the night was donated to My Sister's House, a non-profit based in Sacramento dedicated to serving Asian and Pacific Islander and other under-served women and children impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking.

The absolute highlight of the night, however, was watching amazing performances from local Sacramento Talent and seeing them compete for over $2000 in prize money. M.A.D. Jack took home the grand prize of $1000, with second and third place winners Izzy Ma and Battle Dance also being recognized for their talents respectively, and Nguyen Thuy Tien playing the Dan Tranh won the Janna Shimizu award.

As the Teens Create Dreams board wraps up their activities for the season, they would like to thank everyone in attendance of August's show, as well as everyone who donated time, resources, and money to TCD's cause. Special donors include Norma On, Jeffrey Ota, Tom and Jean Ota, Valley Custom Drapery, Elaine Kurashige, and Dr. Kenneth and Lisa Yasuda.

Thank you!
