From Struggle to Strength: Reflections from the S4SWellness Workshop

By Ted Fong, SASF Strive for Strength

On October 22, SASF, in partnership with Sacramento Youth Center (SYC), concluded a five-week workshop, "8 Dimensions of Wellness," to help young people find their voice, manage their emotions, stay healthy, and build resilience in the face of life's challenges. The program was led by SYC's Clarissa Sainz.

14 students from several Elk Grove Unified School District schools — including Monterey Trail High School, Franklin High School, and Toby Johnson Middle School — participated in the workshop. They discovered the importance of self-awareness, reaching out for help, and communicating openly about their struggles. For many, the workshop became a life-changing experience that reshaped how they view themselves and their potential.

Students wrote essays to address perseverance, self-discovery, and healing in their lives.

In "My Journey Without Him," Edyan Firth describes how she coped with the absence of her father, the illness of her mother, and how she took care of her younger brother through it all. She writes, "Having learned some ways to move on from negative experiences, I now talk my feelings out with someone I really trust. I've distanced myself from people who don't bring any purpose to my life." Read essay.

In "Basketball on My Mind," Emmie Lee talks about how her coach and other players on her team constantly made her feel bad. But, a turn of events presented an opportunity to help others and love the game again. Read essay.

In "The Pursuit of Knowledge," Sky Lee learned from Kobe Bryant's Mamba Mentality how to get out of his comfort zone and improve himself in all aspects of life. He writes, "I know that the more knowledgeable I become, the better I will become at any job, allowing me to branch into whatever field I want to pursue." Read essay.

With programs like 8 Dimensions of Wellness, SASF Strive for Strength continues to provide a safe, inclusive environment where students can share their stories, connect with others, and grow in confidence. We teach that wellness is not about perfection, it's about making progress and having the courage to keep going.

"I grew up in this program, first in summer basketball league and giving back as a basketball coach and referee. This organization does so much for the communities of Sacramento and Elk Grove. Their dedication to youth development through sports and leadership programs include teen women empowerment, a talent show completely organized by youth, and basketball, ages 7-18. They have added new programs to address teen mental health, and sports programs and a fishing derby for special needs youth. Pickleball for Seniors continues to grow by leaps and bounds. An anticipated program with SMUD includes classes on the use of modern and efficient kitchen equipment."

"Join me and my friends who participated in SASF programs and are now giving back in different ways. Donate via the PG&E YourCause website using the Guest option."
